The Kentucky Diabetes Prevention and Control Program has a long-standing history of excellence within the Green River District Health Department and is considered a model program! This program has been a mainstay within the Green River District for over 20 years and continues to provide services by certified diabetes educators including: patient education classes, continuing education for professionals awareness programs, data collection, involvement in state level activities, coalition building at both the state and local level.

Diabetes is an epidemic!!!
- Over 445,200 (14.3% or 1 in 7) adult Kentuckians have diabetes, one third of whom are undiagnosed!
- The Kentucky Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (KDPCP) estimates that 611,000 (40.1%) adult Kentuckians age 40-74 have pre-diabetes --- a major risk factor for diabetes, heart attack and stroke!
- The most recent data from 2007 shows the Kentucky rate for diagnosed diabetes was the 9th highest in the nation at 9.9%, compared to a national rate of 8.1%
- Many people do not have any signs or symptoms of diabetes! Possible signs or symptoms to look for: very thirsty, very hungry, having to urinate a lot, more tired than usual, dry, itchy skin, blurred vision or sores that will not heal.
